BIOGRAPHY

A solo pianist, collaborative artist, and a teaching professional, Pianist Dr. Hyunjung Kim has made her first orchestral debut at age 12 with the San Jose Symphony Youth Orchestra at San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, performing Liszt’s Hungarian Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra.


Dr. Kim has performed at major venues throughout the United States, Europe and Korea as a solo recitalist and a collaborative artist, including Seoul Arts Center, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, among many more.


As a dedicated chamber musician, she performed extensively at prestigious venues in Korea as a member of Einklang Piano Quartet and Verus Piano, Flute and Cello Trio. She also had numerous duo performances with other instruments such as violin, cello, and flute. She was the first to premier the Kabalevsky Sonata for Violin and Piano in Korea at the CAU International Piano Conference and Festival.

Dr. Kim has participated in the Italy Amalfi Coast Music and Arts Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Brevard Music Center, Seoul Music Festival and Academy, Interlochen Arts Camp (Fine Arts Award), San Francisco International Summer Music Festival, Pacific Music Festival of California and has worked with acclaimed international artists such as Aldo Ciccolini, Leon Fleisher, John Perry, Robert McDonald, Elizabeth Pridonoff and Daniel Pollack.

A native Korean, Dr. Kim received a versatile education from both Korea and the United States; she received acceptance and began her music studies at Yewon Arts School and Seoul Arts High School in Korea. In United States, she studied at San Francisco Conservatory of Music pre-college division and Interlochen Arts Academy on a merit scholarship, receiving a Young Artist Award upon graduation.


Dr. Kim went on her professional music studies and received her Bachelor of Music degree from The Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University on a merit scholarship. She received her Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan on a Full Scholarship, and Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and Literature from The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, receiving Full Scholarship and the Langford Fellowship. Her principal teachers include Mack McCray, Stephen Perry, Yong Hi Moon, Logan Skelton and Ian Hobson.

 
 

PIANO STUDIO

Learning to play an instrument may not only enrich one’s life, but it can teach important life skills, such as diligence, dedication and perseverance.

Private instruction by Dr. Kim focuses on: the Artistic Playing, Technical Proficiency, Performance Skills and ultimately, the Enjoyment of playing the piano and developing a lifelong appreciation for music.

Additionally, Dr. Kim will guide the students to develop a good practice habits, problem solving skills, knowledge in music theory/history, sight-reading skills, through which the students will gain more confidence and independence in their own playing. The curriculum and repertoire may be designed accordingly to each student’s different needs, interests, potential and learning style.

Dr. Kim is an active member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA),

New Jersey Music Teachers Association (NJMTA) and the Music Educators Association of New Jersey (MEANJ).

She also welcomes students who needs help in preparation for competitions, college/conservatory auditions, music examinations, summer festivals, recitals, etc.
